PRCC - Weekly Blog

jessica_mSadly summer has come to an end and PRCC had to say goodbye to all of its wonderful campers and summer staff. This summer has proven to be a memorable time for all those who participated in the camps as well as the fantastic staff who helped make the camps a great success.

The last 3 weeks of our Summertime Adventure camp helped the children travel the world during our Around the World week, allowed them to participate in exciting games during Carnival week and helped them get active during our Sports week.

During Around the World week the campers had the opportunity to learn a lot of exciting new facts about other countries learn new games from around the world and finished the week off by creating their own passports to show which countries they had visited all week.

Carnival week brought a lot of exciting moments for our campers. They all took part in many different carnival inspired games, made clown masks and set up a “pie-in-the-face” toss. The campers also enjoyed making and decorating their own cupcakes.

Our last week of summer camp was Sports week where the children enjoyed playing many different sports in the gym, creating different sport-orientated crafts and even watching a sport-related movie on a rainy day. The final day of camp the campers took a trip to Campbell Point Beach for the day where they enjoyed swimming and playing in the sand before returning back to the centre for craft time and free play with all of our gym toys.

My Pals and Me Preschool ended a week before summer camps however for the last 2 weeks of their camp; the children enjoyed creating many different crafts, playing lots of games and ending each day with their favourite time of the day, story time!

Throughout the last 3 weeks of camps, PRCC hosted only one more specialty camp which was another Just Gotta Dance camp on August 16th-20th, this time aimed for a lower age group. The group spent the week perfecting their moves for their grand finale show they put on for their parents at the end of camp on Friday.

Now that summer camps are finished for this year, PRCC is now getting ready to host the many upcoming fall programs which are sure to be a great success. Registration continues for many of our programs so don’t hesitate to call, email or stop by the centre to register. We offer programs for all ages!

jessica_mDid you know that reality TV existed right here in our community? It definitely did this week at PRCC as our theme was “Reality and Game Show Week”. Our specialty camp this week was Drama Camp where the participants became young actors and actresses in only one week!
- by Jessica Morrisey

Our Summertime Adventure Camp enjoyed participating in all sorts of different reality and game show type activities. We started our week off with a game of “Are You Smarter Than A Camp Counsellor” where the counsellors won by one question! On Wednesday the group was divided into teams and enjoyed the competition of Survivor. Thursday our campers showed off their talent in our very own PRCC Got Talent event where the talent ranged from dancing and singing to drumming and miming. Finally on Friday the campers were set out to complete an “Amazing Race” around PRCC where the teams of 2 completed various tasks; the fastest group being the winner.

This week My Pals and Me Preschool did various themes all week where they made all sorts of different crafts and played different kinds of games. The campers enjoyed watching movies on the rainy days and enjoyed, as always, free time in the gymnasium playing with all the toys and balls.

Drama camp this week transformed our campers from children to actors and actresses. The camp enjoyed different sorts of games and worked very hard to put their own twist on the classic story of Cinderella. At the end of the week on Friday afternoon the parents were asked to join them for the presentation of their play!

The centre continues to see many room rentals and fitness centre use by all of its many members. To inquirer about our room rentals and/or fitness centre memberships don’t hesitate to contact the front desk!

jessica_mPRCC Weekly – July 26th - 30th This week the PRCC day camps certainly made a splash on the centre as the theme this week was “Water Week”. Also, this week our specialty camp danced their way through the week with our amazing “Just Gotta Dance” day camp program.
    - Jessica Morrissey

This week our Summertime Adventure Camp and My Pals and Me Camp took the plunge into a wet and wild week with activities including water balloon tosses, various games involving sponges filled with water and water themed crafts. The preschool campers enjoyed playing on an inflatable water slide that some parents were very generous to set up for a day for them and both camps enjoyed watching a water related movie on those days when it was just a little to wet outside.

Our specialty camp this week was our Just Gotta Dance camp. These campers enjoyed learning a structured dance routine designed by our dance instructor. They also had the opportunity to create their own routines in small groups. On Friday they had the chance to show off these routines to the their parents in a mini dance recital held at the end of class.

I had the pleasure of meeting with a group of seniors this week as well. All those seniors involved in the area's Seniors Network were invited to join me for a meeting regarding senior programing at PRCC and we finished the day off by having a tour of the facility. There was a great response for the seniors as many attended and gave lots of input. I want to send out a great thanks to those who attended!

Finally just a reminder that we are still registering for day camps, preschool and specialty camps. Without your children participation we wouldn't have been able to make these camps such a great success ! Take a look at our list of programs being offered for the rest of the summer below and be sure to keep a close eye for our upcoming fall programing to be released soon!

jessica_mAhoy! from PRCC where it was all hands on deck this week as the theme was “Pirate Week”. The centre saw many mischievous captains, first mates and landlubbers and by Friday it was time to batten down the hatches with yet another successful week under our belt.
    - Jessica Morrissey

Our Summertime Adventure Camp this week took all necessary actions to transform into pirates including making pirate hats and going on a scavenger hunt where in the end they found a treasure chest full of gold; chocolate gold that is.

Our specialty camp this week was Basketball Camp for the second week this summer. The returning campers are truly improving their skills and the new campers are certainly learning lots. The camp continued to learn many fundamental skills through a variety of drills and fun games.

More exciting things happened this week at PRCC. We announced that we would be offering another week of summer camp at the end of August, also a variety of new specialty camps were announced. See the lists below for further details and be sure to sign up soon as space is limited and if not enough children are registered we will have to unfortunately cancel the program. We hosted our Zumba, Dance Fit and All In One Fitness samplers which were all full classes. These classes were very popular and are a strong possibility for full programs in the fall.

jessica_mThis week may have been rainy and dark but things at the Prospect Road Community Centre were certainly busy and exciting. The centre hosted three more groups of children in our three different summer camps as well as four more sampler programs.

The theme this week for our Summertime Adventure Camp and My Pals and Me Preschool was “Random Theme Week” where the children enjoyed a different theme every day. Monday was Pajama Day, where many campers wore their pajamas for the day; followed by Halloween Day on Tuesday where we saw many different costumes and even had a toilet paper mummy competition. Wednesday was crazy hair and hat day; our preschoolers celebrated this day by decorating paper hats to take home as their craft of the day.

Thursday was Hawaiian Day and thankfully the sun began to shine so we were able to set up the sprinkler for the campers to enjoy for the afternoon. Friday was Decade Day which brought back some fond memories for many of our parents when helping their children prepare for that day. The rain earlier in the week did not stop our camp from being fun for all. We were able to thankfully watch a movie in our conference room which was projected onto the big screen to make the campers feel as if they were at a movie theatre.

The days of imagining a fitness centre; a place for clubs and activities; after school, arts and crafts, music and sports programs and cooking classes and bake sales here in our community have finally come to an end.
    - By Jessica Morrissey

The Prospect Road Area finally has a community centre and what a beautiful centre it is. With our first official week operating this fantastic facility under our belt, things can only get better from here.

Summertime Adventure Camp (for children aged 6-11) kicked off our first week with many children showing up at 730am (that’s right! You CAN arrange for your children to be dropped off at 730am, for a small fee) Once all 30 children arrived at 830am camp was set to go and it was all smiles from there! This week’s theme was “Olympic Week” which had the children learning how to play many different sports and making their own Olympic medals at craft time along with team flags and other various fun, theme related activities.

My Pals and Me Preschool (for children aged 3-5) followed along with the “Olympic Week” theme. The 7 preschoolers learned about the Olympics, played many different Olympic-related games and created a lot of great Olympic artwork. These children also were the proud creators of many fabulous crafts, including Olympic medals, Olympic torches and sport-related puppets. The favorite game of the week was by far “Duck, Duck, Goose” and many enjoyed story time.

Our specialty camp for the week this week was Basketball Camp (for children aged 7-14). These 11 children learned all the fundamentals necessary to be a successful basketball player through many different fun and interactive games and drills. Children at all different skills levels were involved and lots of learning took place. Basketball Camp will take place two more times this summer during the week of July 19th-23rd and August 9th-13th! Some other specialty camps being offered this summer are All Over Sports Camp, Drama Camp and Just Gotta Dance Camp. Call the centre for more info or to register!
